What Causes Rhomboid Muscle Pain and How to Treat It

Rhomboid muscle strain or spasm is usually caused by overuse of the shoulder and arm. Pain in the rhomboid muscle or in the upper back and shoulders can be caused by many things, such as injury, strain, or overuse. When the rhomboids contain trigger points, you may feel pain on the inside of the shoulder blade and between them. If the pain comes from the muscle between the shoulder blades, exercises can be very helpful.

The rhomboids are responsible for shoulder lift and downward rotation. You may experience aches or tension in the upper back, between the shoulder and the spine. To ease the pain, you can start by releasing the sore area with a massage ball. Stretching should be done carefully as it can cause further pain if done too much.

Rhomboid pain is called interscacular pain that can reach the base of the neck or to the middle of the back. When the head is retracted against a wall, after a short time (about 10 seconds) the pain radiates to the forearm muscle. The darker red in an image, the more common it will be to feel pain in that area if the rhomboid muscles contain activation points. If you use your arm too much for activities such as cleaning or gardening, it can cause severe headache and pain in your arm that will last for days.

Sharp pain will radiate from the upper muscle on one side of your neck and down your arm to your fingers. If you have persisted with exercises and continue to experience many symptoms in this area, it may not be caused by your rhomboids. In this case, it is best to consult a doctor for further diagnosis and treatment.
